PROCESS MODELS

I am struggling to get models out of my emotions collage. But so far i have this model, which shows pealing and breaking of something.

These models above are derived from my programs collage. All of these models have a free and flexible flow to it. I related this flow to the film.

These models are derived from the "Edge" collage. All of these models stand on three point, which to me represent edges that hold up a structure.

  1. The first and sixth images are captivating. There is spatial quality and somehow an evocation of temporality or at least narrative, both of which are emblematic of film. The relationship is strong.

Where you are struggling with the others is probably getting away from the literal connections to the collages. At this ojnt there is nothing wrong in pushing beyond previous steps in your development. Make the process your own within the framework of the assignments.

  2. The emotions collage feelings are hard to make into a model without being to literal.

  3. Try to capture the feeling you are after in a formal or sculptural expresson. For example anger would be hard and angular...happiness large and curvilinear... Etc.

  4. I also agree with Andy, with 1st and 6th model have the potential.
Literal is fine for the first stab. Try making few more literal models and analyze what you made. Consider how you can improve that model can become spatial.

  5. Interesting how the black and white photo makes the models more compelling. But they all still look the same. I agree that the first one and the sixth one have potential, but I would love to see further exploration.
Without trying to be "corny" have you thought of using an old negative for a model or a film reel

  6. I have never seen chip board look so nice! I think you should explore more materials, textures that relates to the emotions or ideas that you are trying to express in your collages.

  7. You have made a great start, Guranter, and your models capture a lot more than what you may think. In describing your "emotions" collage you used the words "cold", "lonely", "broken", "deserted" and "sad". Emotions can change just like different scenes in a film do. Changing emotions is about transition, renewal and even regeneration and most (if not all) of your models are certainly suggesting these ideas. Personally I wouldn't rule out model no.7.

  8. Jill and Lia's comment made me aware again that you expressed your model in monochrome. I would like to hear why you chose that instead of color?

There are some amazing contemporary movies (feature or shorts) that are intentionally shot in black and white, and these directors did it for certain reason. You might want to be critical why you did shoot your model in black and white. What were your benefits?

As films tend to have a sequence / transitions, emotions also change. There must be a way your "sad" emotions become "lively". This can be true with your architectural spaces you may be designing.

Also, don't forget movies are "motion pictures". Perhaps it will be a good exercise to take multiple shots of your same models from different angles (from aerial, "ant's eye", human views, rotating around, etc.

Films are always watched in a closed box theater, but you can also watch them outdoors like in the summers of Bryant Park and Brooklyn Bridge Park. Also TV, projections. And now with new technology tablets and smart phones.
