COLLAGES

"EMOTIONS" COLLAGE

Visiting the site was devastating because of the after effects of hurricane Sandy. Observing the site, emotions that were involved were cold, lonely, broken, deserted, and sad.

"PROGRAM" COLLAGE

When i think of filming, i ponder about images that deal with deception, photo shoots, camera, and flow. Also, Panorama pictures, which provides the ability to catch a wide scene in a single photo. When i design the film studios/ hotel i want my guests to experience all of the following at the same time.

"EDGE" COLLAGE

The word "Edge" in itself can be interpreted in many different ways by everyone. When i think of the word edge, the ideas of a waterfront, tip of a building, sharp corners, illusions, a membrane which divides space come to mind.

  1. Your emotions collage is a great evocative piece. I can see form in the assembly as well as meaning and ambiance. THe spatial quality is nice.

The other 2 collages are less evocative. I will go so far as to say that the program collage enters into the realm of [bad] graphic/commercial design. Worse than the literally, the execution is not clean enough to call it a visually captivating, much less convey meaningfulness. The Edge collage has more direction, but falls prey to the same weaknesses. Think about these as architectural and not graphic...that will help you shape these explorations.

  2. I think the collage can improve to some extent and not be literal, especially the program collage. Since the program is going to be film/hotel, how about finding some hints from that?

Film/movies that we typically watch are "linear", there is a definite start and end. On the other hand, the process of creating a Film/movies are "non-linear", the scenes the film crews shoot do not follow the sequence of the actual film.

Hotel program are typically a linear sequence. You enter the hotel, check-in, get the keys, go to the room.... go to restaurant, back to your room... series of linear and loop sequence.

It can be an extra stretch but you can also be inspired by closely watching some movies. Be very critical when you watch though. Some film techniques can be brought to architectural and spatial conditions.
